Why We Model Ourselves

I have been feeling for some time that I’ve wanted to have a conversation with our customers about this topic, but I began to doubt whether this would be a good enough post or interesting enough read for our blog. I decided to go for it this week after I read another recent post about the change in ad campaign faces from so many other fashion brands, which I found to be very interesting. It inspired me to have this very honest talk about the vision and the intent behind our brand.

Before I say anything else, the first thing I would like you to keep in mind is this: modeling for our line is very challenging – and a tich scary – for us. While that might sound somewhat ridiculous and dramatic, it’s true. Unless you count watching America’s Next Top Model in college (PS – I’m still confused about ‘smizing’), neither of us have any experience or training in this department – zero, zilch, nada! Regardless, we agreed from the very beginning that it would be super important for us to put our own brand on and put ourselves out there for the world to see. Why is that so important to us?

#1) We want you to get to know us.

As two tall girls ourselves, we both have lived through a lifetime of struggling to find well-fitting clothes and we founded Amalli Talli so that we could truly change the retail landscape for tall women and also empower and encourage them to love their height. When we allow ourselves to be the face of our company, we feel that it allows our customers to get to know us on a more personal level so that we can connect with you. And connecting with you is the best part of our jobs!  When we make those personal connections, we can then learn so much more about what you need from us – whether that’s items for your wardrobe or simply some words of encouragement. And hopefully when you connect with us, you’ll learn that we are two down-to-earth tall girls just like you who are simply doing their best to make a difference for this niche!

#2) We want to show you that our brand is truly for more than one height.

I am 5’10” and Amy is 6’3.5″ – you’ll never find us pretending that those 5″ of height between us doesn’t make a big difference when trying on clothes. For this reason, we like to model our own brand so that A) you can clearly see that our pieces work for a range of heights and B) you can see how our pieces look on each respective height.  When we are designing a piece and realize that the optimum length of that item (like a maxi dress) isn’t the same for both of us, we produce it in two lengths – fittingly called the Alli Length (developed for 5’10” – 6’1″) and the Amy Length (developed for 6’2″+). We also want to show you in pictures that this methodology really works for a perfect fit!

#3) We want to be real and authentic.

In a time and culture where the highlight reels of social media can have such a negative impact on girls’ self esteem, we want more than anything to just be ourselves and to create a platform where women relate to and empower one another. Absolutely no photo-shopping or altering our own images for any reason. We even do our own hair and make-up for our shoots! And since we’re being real real, I’ll admit that 99% of the time we struggle to even find time to get a proper mani/pedi beforehand. At the end of the day we’re not here because we are perfect, we’re here because we relate to your struggles as tall women and we want to show you how passionate we are about building this brand to help all of our tall sisters out there like us!

#4) We don’t want to put anyone else through the misery of shooting in Minnesota’s climate.

HA! This one is just a joke – kind of! 😉 In all honesty though, this is probably our biggest challenge right now! With that being said, our goal for the upcoming year is to get more women involved in our campaigns when it’s not freezing cold outside. We would love nothing more than to continually show our customers that our clothing line matches our brand beliefs – that tall isn’t solely defined by height and comes in a variety of shapes and sizes.  If you emailed us last year – don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you! But if  you missed our modeling call last year – here’s the deets: if you are in Minneapolis – St. Paul and would be interested in modeling for our brand, shoot us an email at info@amallitalli.com! Our modeling requirements are as follows: 1) You have a body. 2) You are tall. 3) You like our brand and our mission. 4) That’s all!

At the end of the day, we choose to be the face of our company so that you know our brand is genuine and real. We relate to all of your tall girl problems and we want to show you how passionate we are about building this brand to help solve as many of those problems as we can. We appreciate your support more than you could imagine and have genuinely loved getting to know so many of you! Thanks for reading 🙂 – Alli
